About Silk Route Village Resort

Several decades ago when this tiny Himalayan State was under the monarchy regime, the Route emanating from Kalimpong, a major trade centre of silk products coming from Tibet to India then and the same passing through Algarah-Pedong in northern West Bengal State and to Rhenock-Rongli-Phadamchen-Zuluk-Gnathang-Kupup to Nathula Pass in the eastern Sikkim State was known as the Silk Route which was the life-line for the trade of the prized silk from Tibet then. The Silk Route was used extensively mainly for economic growth by traders and porters travelling from Kalimpong and the plains on their way to Shigatse and Lhasa in the Land of Snow. The historically important Nathula Pass which was the gateway to Tibet for the trade of silk then is now open again for the notified period each year for certain identified commodities for the trade between India and China as agreed to by the two countries. Visit to this old historical Silk Route and the Nathula Pass in this part of the most scenic and peaceful eastern region of the State of Sikkim is a life time experience for a tourist and it may be often for birders and trekkers.

Bird Watching

The Resort is best located for bird watching. A birder has appreciated this in his recent visit in May, 2018. Location, within short walking distance harbours a variety of birds such as Himalayan Pied Kingfisher, Great Hill Barbet, Golden-throated Barbet, Himalayan Golden-backed Three-toed Woodpecker, Indian Golden-backed Three-toed Woodpecker, Mini-vets, Bulbuls, Forest Mynas, Flycatchers, Drongos, Magpies, Red-headed Trogon, Tree Pies, Tits, Finches, Nuthatches, Thrushes, Owls, Redstarts, Magpie-Robin, Sunbirds. One may also by luck come across highland birds such as Monal, Crimson-horned, Blood Pheasants, Partridges and Ducks during highland drives. A place called Talkharka located within an hour’s drive from the Resort has been recently explored by birders and they took the picture of rare Ward’s Trogon there.

Wildlife Photography

This outdoor excursion comes under tour package and can be arranged by providing tented accommodation in three or four places for a period about 10-12 days if planned well in advance. This is conducted mainly in high altitude areas for camera shots of Himalayan Tahr, Blue Sheep, Red Panda, Marmot, Goral, Serow, Snow Leopard, Bison and also high altitude pheasants and cocks depending on the choice for target animals and location. No doubt, one with well equipped photographic equipments etc. should especially be physically fit, able to stay and trek 4-5 hours a day in harsh climate in high altitude areas. Enthusiast wildlife photographers with good pair of lungs, strong legs and an adventurous spirit may trek to Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary by planning 3-4 days camping in the jungle for the photography of pheasants, smaller wilds, bison and red panda. The Sanctuary is on a day’s trekking distance from the Resort and no road connectivity to the wildlife points.
